Lacy was brought to Kris by someone in the community that found her on the doorstep, broken, scared and very skinny. She clearly had injuries, but this kind lady was unable to care for her. After a much needed flea bath, a vet appointment was made and Lacy’s journey to recovery began.

She had a broken hip (on the growth plate) that was dislocated and healed in a dislocated position. Her pelvis had healed fractures, a piece of her pelvis was broken off and the entire pelvis was tipped (that was discovered much later by a hip specialist). She had skin issues, bladder issues, and to top that off, she was emaciated. Despite all of her physical ailments, she was a picture of pure joy! She never showed signs that she was in pain (although not sure how she wasn’t!). Since she was really just a puppy when she started her journey with the Barbers, they had to wait for her to be at least 10 months old to consider a total hip replacement (THR). Texas A&M Orthopedics determined she was an ideal candidate for a THR until a more detailed examination of her xrays was done by the surgeon. The possibility of paralysis was very high with all of the scar tissue that had formed in her hip area. Many vets were consulted and ultimately, the decision was made to do more of a salvage surgery for her hip, called a FHO or femoral head ostectomy.

There is quite a bit of medical stuff that happened between her FHO surgery and present day. Suffices to say she is finally doing better but being monitored as her body seems to have tried to heal itself with an enormous amount of scar tissue that causes her hip to “catch” if she stretches out. She is still a candidate for a THR, despite having had an FHO already, but everyone involved in her care is hopeful that will never be needed. Until such time that more surgery is needed, she swims every day and does her physical therapy in the hot tub! Water therapy is the best thing for her and it is encouraged as often as possible by both her physical therapist and her orthopedic doctors. She LOVES that prescription! No arguments LOL!

Kris & Chuck decided Lacy would more than likely be a sanctuary dog, based on her extensive medical history and the potential for more surgeries in her future. They did not feel like she was a candidate for adoption, coming with an extensive price tag in her future. For now, Lacy will spend her days swimming, barking at the squirrels outside the fence, playing with Gypsy and winning over everyone that she meets with her silly personality! She is such a special dog (with the capacity to chew anything in site! LOL)
