Boudreaux (originally “Buddy”) was abandoned in a secluded park in May of 2021. Many folks had tried to get close to him but he was only really interested in following a man that was going to the park at lunch. Boudreaux would approach, just far enough that he couldn’t be caught but close enough to let the man know he was interested. The man went to the park around lunchtime for several days, bringing food, and posted the plight of this dog on the NextDoor app.Originally, the folks trying to catch him thought he was an old dog based on his stature and the huge chunk taken out of his ear. He had scars on his head and just appeared broken down.
A fellow rescuer, the same one that brought Gypsy to Kris, called to see if she could help. Kris and Hailey were in the midst of the last leg of the trip back from Florida. They estimated arrival back in Houston at 2-3pm and said they would drop everything off at home and go out to the park. While they were driving, others were working on finding a place for this big guy to go. A foster was secured so Kris & Hailey went to the park to see if they could help.
The dog was definitely interested in the man he’d been following, but still cautious. Kris asked Hailey and the man to stay behind at the picnic tables so she could get a better idea of his temperament and if she’d be able to wait him out and get a leash on him. The dog had moved away a bit, over to a picnic table – still close, but he was trying to sus out whether Kris and Hailey were there as friend or foe. Kris approached him and got pretty close, but he casually got up and wandered toward the pond nearby. She decided to just sit on the sidewalk with a piece of hotdog in her hand, palm up, behind her. He was definitely interested! It didn’t take long to get the leash over his head
Once he was secured on the leash, he was taken to a local vet. He had a very deep gash on the inside of his leg that needed stitches and he needed to be neutered. The plan was to board him at the vet that night so he could have surgery in the morning. The vet agreed and the folks helping with Boudreaux’s rescue got to work trying to find a forever home for him while Kris talked to the potential foster over the phone. After an hour long conversation, the decision was made for Kris and Hailey to pick up Boudreaux from the vet and take him to the foster’s house to be sure everything was suitable for him. Unfortunately, Kris was misled by the potential foster but now where could he go?
There was nowhere for Boudreaux to go except animal control. More than likely, they would have turned him away due to the volume they took in during the covid timeframe. Kris’ house was full and even the garage was taken up by Gypsy. German Shepherd rescues were inundated and every other rescue that was contacted said the same thing – “if you can foster, we might be able to help financially.” RTTRS was not established at that point so Kris talked over what to do with Chuck and Hailey. The decision to clean out Hailey’s work area in the garage room and move Gypsy into the house permanently, seemed to be the only option.
Boudreaux made himself right at home! Kris stayed in the garage room with him for the first few nights. He was content being in the room and sleeping in between walks out to the big dog run. Boudreaux developed a real affection for Chuck, and his inner Husky voice emerges if he sees Chuck through the window! He is definitely one of the dogs that have captured Chuck’s heart – he likes Kris but he adores Chuck!
